2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is also evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears particularly strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be on the verge of a true amphibian entertainment revival.
